If you have a hammertoe, it is important that you visit our podiatry practice, Steven F. Berkey, DPM, FACFS for treatment. At our office, you can receive complete hammertoes treatment in Richardson TX by our expert and highly trained podiatrist, Dr. Steven F. Berkey.
A hammertoe can be either rigid or flexible. When you have a hammertoe, it means that your toe looks like an upside down “V” when viewed from the side. It occurs because the middle joint of the toe has stiffened, or even become fixed in place. If you have a flexible hammertoe, the hammertoe can still be straightened out. However, most hammertoes will progress to becoming rigid hammertoes. A rigid hammertoe cannot be straightened out as the joint has totally stiffened, and arthritis is possibly set into the toe joint. Hammertoes can cause a great deal of pain because the topmost portion of the toe will consistently rub against your shoe, and the arthritic joint will be painful as well. Toes with a hammertoe problem can develop corns or other problems. When you have a flexible hammertoe, our foot doctor can provide different types of treatment which may keep the hammertoe from becoming rigid. Prescription orthotics can be very helpful in this case, and can be comfortably worn in your shoes to keep additional pressure from being placed on the hammertoe. If your hammertoe turns into a rigid hammertoe, it will definitely need to be treated. However, at this point, generally the only effective hammertoes treatment in Richardson TX available is foot surgery. A hammertoe can occur on any toe. Sometimes when a toe is very curled, it is actually a hammertoe.
